This week I’m honored to have Washington DC's Analiese Bendorf, a Grant Writer and Researcher. She's the first creative administrative interviewee I've had and I am so excited! I've worked in the arts advocacy world and also with many, many nonprofits, and know how CRUCIAL Analiese's job is for the arts to thrive. She is passionate about her writing and her work! 1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share) I work as a Grant Writer and Researcher for an art museum in Washington, DC. I meet with staff members from all departments of the museum to learn about upcoming programs and projects that need funding. This could be anything from launching a contemporary installation series to designing art-integrated educational programs to acquiring new equipment for the museum's art conservation lab and more. I research and identify funding sources for these projects, then write grant proposals to foundations and government agencies. Once a grant has been awarded, I'm responsible for writing reports and other pieces of correspondence to keep the funder informed of the impact of the grant. I've always been passionate about both writing and art, and I feel extremely fortunate to be in a position which combines the two. It's a joy to know that my work helps enable the museum to serve the Washington community (as well as a national and international audience of visitors) and to impact peoples' lives through the power of art.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?) The arts have played a significant role in my life from a very young age. As a child, I spent hours drawing, painting, and crafting, and also took dance lessons and piano lessons for many years. My parents took me and my younger sister to museums, concerts, and plays, and strongly encouraged my artistic leanings. As a result, the idea that creative expression should be honored and supported was ingrained in me from an early age. At George Washington University, I majored in Cultural Anthropology, studying how humans communicate and interpret meaning within and across cultures. The school's Anthropology program benefited from a unique partnership with the Smithsonian Institution, and I had the opportunity to take classes on-site at the various museums, taught by Smithsonian curators. I became interested in the way museums express their unique knowledge and mission to the world, and began to seriously consider a career in the museum world. With my love of art, it became clear to me that using my writing abilities to further the mission of an art museum was a natural fit. I continue to learn everything I can about my craft by taking classes and workshops (such as those offered by Foundation Center); talking to other individuals in the field (I've connected with some through Twitter!); and reading numerous blogs and publications (see #5 below for some examples).

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path? Service. I feel that I am using my abilities in service of a cause larger than myself, which is to advocate for the importance of art, and to help make possible the kind of artistic experiences that empower and inspire people and contribute to making Washington, DC a culturally vital community.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any? In this difficult economy, securing grants is more challenging than ever, especially for the arts, which, in times of great need, are sometimes viewed by funders as less important than basic human services. However, with this challenge comes a great opportunity as many museums and arts organizations are being forced to innovate in order to attract new audiences and fulfill their missions with fewer resources. The organizations who use this crisis as a catalyst for rethinking how they can provide relevant and robust programming in a more efficient way (by forming partnerships with other non-profits, for example) are the ones who will emerge scrappy and victorious on the other side of this mess, and they will be better for it.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do? You can spend forever "preparing" for your life's work, but the best way to begin is to begin. For example, if you're interested in writing about art, start writing about art and submit your writing to a couple publications. If you want to work in the non-profit world or a museum specifically, schedule an informational interview to learn more. Find a mentor, get an internship, volunteer...just start doing. Don't fall into the trap of thinking that you have to have a specific type of educational or work background. Degrees and other types of formal training are useful, but enthusiasm, discipline, and a willingness to learn count for a lot, no matter what field you're interested in. That being said, if you want to work at a museum, it wouldn't hurt to learn more about the museum world by, of course, visiting lots of museums and reading blogs, books, magazines, etc. One of my favorite museum-related blogs is Museum 2.0, by the fantastic Nina Simon, who designs participatory and innovative museum experiences. You can also stay current on topics in philanthropy and the non-profit world by reading publications like the Chronicle of Philanthropy and Philanthropy News Digest. The Foundation Center offers free classes, workshops, and webinars geared toward those in the non-profit world. I also recommend the very excellent book Storytelling for Grantseekers: The Guide to Creative NonProfit Fundraising.

The way to Self is being Uncomfortable

A few days ago I had a fitness assessment. The sad numbers weren’t a surprise, as I know I have a lot of work to do on my physical Self. The trainer advised me that the #1 word I cannot use while exercising is “comfortable.” If I’m comfortable, I’m not going to get the results I wish for. In order to change, I must get uncomfortable and pretty often. I need to sweat, move my body in ways that are different, be consistent, and try new things.

The same goes for expressive arts coaching, life coaching, expressive arts facilitation, and even therapy at times. If your goal is to find your life purpose, then you need to get Uncomfortable by way of really evaluating your life, hiring someone to help you, and also be open to taking some risks. If your goal is to get more organized, you need to get Uncomfortable with filing those papers every single day for the next 21 days until it becomes a habit even though you can make up excuses why those stacks can wait for another time. If you are suffering from an addiction, in order to cross over to the other side of it, there will be many days of being Uncomfortable, and that’s where the breakthroughs live.

So to summarize,

Comfortable = status quo

Uncomfortable = growth and progress

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)

I’m a creative self-development coach and the owner of Jamie Ridler Studios. My work revolves around helping creative, independent spirits step out of the shadows and be the star they are. I do this through coaching, workshops, products and online activities.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

What a journey! In many ways I’ve been preparing for this work my entire life. I’ve always been a creative creature and grew up surrounded by books and paints, fabrics and puppets. My first love was dance and then the theatre. I discovered coaching after admitting to myself that the path I was on (a doctorate in drama) was taking me in the wrong direction. I did a great deal of soul-searching, brainstorming, discussing with friends and loved ones to get clear on my best skills, my deepest loves, how I wanted to make a difference and what I wanted to get out of a career. When I found coaching, it fit me like a dream. I did the core curriculum and then certification with the life-changing Coaches Training Institute (www.thecoaches.com). Later, to help bring my creativity and coaching together, I took a foundational program in Expressive Arts Therapy at ISIS in Toronto (http://www.isis-canada.org).

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?

Life. Individuality. Sacredness. Love. Self-Expression. Courage.

I believe that we are here for 2 purposes: to be ourselves and to love our lives. Being ourselves involves knowing who we are, expressing and sharing the richness and the uniqueness that we bring to this world. And loving our lives means both tending them lovingly and also creating a life we’re wildly in love with. That’s the work I do. Delicious.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

Growing what I offer into a business has been a challenge but also the most surprising and extraordinary opportunity for self-development. I had no idea that it could be like this. I’ve had to release all sorts of limiting beliefs about business, marketing, networking, sales and money. Now Jamie Ridler Studios feels like an exciting creative project full of connecting, inspiration, sharing, love and exchange. And that’s business. How cool is that?

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

Take the first step. We can all spend so much time preparing, training, reading, visioning, journaling, discussing, planning, that it takes us years to step into the adventure of our dreams. All of that is important but wherever you can, reach inside and find the curiosity and courage to take a step. That step will give you immediate and important information. We can wonder for hours about what something tastes like but in the second it takes to put it in our mouths, we know! So have a taste. See how it feels. NEA Budget gets $12.5 million boost!! Yahoo!

Yesterday, Congress passed a $12.5 million funding increase as part of the FY 2010 Interior Appropriations bill for both the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). President Obama is scheduled to sign this bill into law by October 31, which concludes National Arts and Humanities Month. The nation's two federal grantmaking cultural agencies will now each have budgets of $167.5 million, their highest funding levels in 16 years. As so many state and local governments have had to cut arts budgets across the country, this well-timed federal appropriations increase for the arts is a welcome infusion of funds.

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)
I am a working painter. Inspired by the living, breathing landscape around me, particularly the ancient rocks of the Laurentian mountains in Quebec.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)
Formally I studied Fine Arts at John Abbott College in Montreal where I was able to explore every medium from photography to printmaking, sculpture to performance art. From there I went on to York University in Toronto to study Fine Arts majoring in painting. I found the university environment to be stifling and confining and after three years, cashed in my scholarship, bought a motorcycle and headed for California. This bike trip was the beginning of my career as an artist. I carried a portable watercolor kit with me wherever I traveled. I learned to observe closely, to see beneath the surface and reveal what I saw in paint. I traveled and looked at great Art everywhere I could as well as studying with many different artists in different mediums. I sat with the rocks, rivers and forests and listened.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?
I am following what brings me spontaneous joy! This is both a blessing and a curse but I have no choice. I am following the path of all those who have gone before me and all those who will continue on ahead of me. The path of most resistance, the one where everyone keeps telling you not to do what you do so you have to be sure enough of your vision to follow it anyway. I have learned to trust my intuition and let it guide me.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?
Doubt. Always the gnawing doubt that I am not good enough to call myself a painter. Also,the images that evolve and want to express themselves come from deep within and reveal themselves through dreams and visions. Revealing these inner images can leave one feeling vulnerable and exposed. Viewers negative or positive criticism can be disruptive to the process so there is always a need for shielding & balancing the inner with the outer visions.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?
Do whatever it is that brings you joy, the rest will follow naturally; leading you to work
many, many hours with an unparalleled discipline and and devotion to what you do. To learn what you need to know, do what you love, live your passion!

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)

I am a creative arts therapist working in private practice as well as a painter & mixed media artist

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

I obtained my undergraduate degrees in psychology and fine art and during that time I was perfectly ok with the thought of spending my life as a nomadic starving artist. Then one day, can't really say when, someone told me about the field of art therapy and my whole life sort of shifted, and it all just began to make sense! So I pursued my graduate degree in creative arts therapy, went through the long hours that it took to become a fully credentialed art therapist, and threw myself into books and art...it was a thirst for knowledge and alot of self-educating and practice.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?

Healing on one's own terms, knowledge, the right to be an expressive human being and honoring that in others. The value of living outside the box...and then building the box around yourself...that's a biggie.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

I would have say there are 2 huge and quite frustrating struggles I have faced since entering this field 7years ago.

The 1st, is the realization that many people do not take my craft seriously...and even more don't even understand what I do! I have had to really put myself out there in the community to educate people because I truly, passionately believe in the healing power of creative expression. And most people do not get it.

The 2nd, is that I do not have nearly enough time anymore to focus on my own work. I honestly, not for a minute, thought that would ever become an issue for me. But, 1 demanding career and 1 toddler later, and it has taken its toll on my ability to find balance for myself. I never thought I would long for the starving artist dreams!

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

Never lose sight of the reasons you are choosing this path... the art and your clients. They are both gifts beyond imagination.

What is Expressive Arts Coaching and Facilitation?

What is it?

Think of the process as a fusion of creative expression and personal development work. Participants may gain clarity around an issue, such as finding one's life purpose, and/or get in touch with one's creative Self. The process tends to be a place of discovery with Aha! moments peppered throughout a session or workshop.

What forms of creative expression are utilized?
This is a sample list of the different ways coaches and facilitators engage you in the creative process for clarity and self-discovery:

Visual Arts: painting, drawing, collage, clay, masks, sculpting, sand tray, mandalas, mixed media

Writing: poetry, haiku, journaling, memoir writing, creative writing, short stories

Music: drumming, singing, music-making, listening, song writing, sounding

Movement: dance, breath work, authentic movement

Drama: storytelling, theater games, role playing

Who would be interested in a workshop or session?
Anyone who is interested in one or all of the following:

unleashing and widening the space for their creative Self to surface
finding answers and exploring ideas about their careers, life purpose, self-esteem, and relationships (such as a spouse/partner, family, friends, colleague, or boss)
someone who currently works in the creative arts such as writers, artists, dancers, designers who are experiencing a block or who wishes to dive deeper into their art form or explore another

Why would someone choose to attend an expressive arts coaching or facilitation workshop or session?
They are ready to try something new and different, and believe that something can happen while engaging in art-making. They are excited to venture into a deeper understanding of themselves while engaging in the creative process whatever form that may be - writing, collage, drumming, etc.

Anything else?
Expressive Arts Coaching and Facilitation can be therapeutic but it is not therapy. There are expressive arts/creative arts therapists, art therapists, music therapists, and drama therapists who do some coaching and facilitation BUT a coach or facilitator usually is not providing therapy because they are not licensed nor is it the focus of their work. Coaches and facilitators do not diagnose. Some clients work with a coach/facilitator as an alternative to, or as a complement to, their traditional talk therapy.

Lastly, the client does not need to be artistic to reap the benefits of this style of personal development! The focus is on process not product.

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)
I consider myself to be a professional artist, painter and sculptor. I have been doing that for several years and have exhibited in galleries throughout New England. However, I also teach art part-time at Tunxis Community College as well as a painting course at Manchester Community College. On top of this I am a freelance web designer and upcoming author of the book 'Art Is Dead'. I also work in business consulting to help companies with their online web branding. I believe having a diverse range of work and jobs keeps me sane and inspired.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)
My formal education is in architecture from Norwich University. I have a passion for architecture but realized that the business of architecture simply was not for me. Throughout my schooling I dove into art and web design as further creative outlets. Upon graduation I took the road less traveled and tried my hand at web design entrepreneurship. The company did not succeed but it taught me quite a bit and allowed me to make smarter business decisions which I then applied to art and freelance work. There is a wealth of knowledge available at the click of a button now to teach you about anything you may want to do, you just have to have the will to do it.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?
I think in today's society we often limit ourselves and rely on a single profession. We get a degree in 'XX' and we are told that for the foreseeable future we will work in the 'XX' field. Sure it is stability, but I think it limits our ability to expand our own interactions with the world including our spirituality. I wanted to prove to myself that I was not defined by what is written on my degree and I believe I have done that. I don't think I am the 9-5 type.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?
I think the route that I am on is the hardest road to find. There involves quite a bit of uncertainty and I would not recommend it for everyone. Jobs sometimes are few and far between and sometimes I won't sell a painting for months at a time. It brings new meaning to the saying 'living pay-check to pay-check'. It also can take years before you have established yourself to where you get enough work to pay your bills. However these challenges often birth new opportunities and it is the struggles and challenges that really keep me motivated. It is a bit like being on a roller coaster and if you are a thrill-seeker then you won't mind the dips and dives.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?
My advice would be that it is a challenging life but I believe it to be the most rewarding. I love waking up every morning and everyday is something to look forward to. You have to be self-motivated and you have to be able to cope with failure. The most successful people are also the ones who failed the most times. Explore new opportunities everyday, treat your clients right, and most importantly work hard. You'll work harder than you ever have before, but you'll love every moment of it.

Life's Purpose Found with Simple Test

Have you ever felt like you weren't living up to your potential or something was missing in our life? Finding one's life purpose is a constant struggle for many people. Fortunately, there are resources available to help with the process. One such resource is a career/interest test that I utilize in my Expressive Arts Coaching practice. The test is based on John Holland's Theory which concludes six personality types exist: Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional. Most people are a combination of these and the test reveals which ones by producing a three letter code, such as RIE (realistic, investigative, enterprising). Knowing your code is beneficial for self-awareness and aids in career planning.

The test provides other information such as: if the test-taker prefers to work alone or with others, do they prefer practical learning or academic environments, are they suited to be a leader or not, and a list of ten possible occupations is given.

Rachel M. is a 26 year old undergraduate art student in Chicago. After switching her major a few times, she came to me seeking career clarification since she will be graduating soon.

According to Rachel's test results, her Holland Code is SAE = Social, Artistic, and Enterprising.

She scored highest as a Social type implying that she enjoys and prefers working with people not data (like an accountant) nor objects (like a stained glass artist). The way she enjoys working with people isn't by protecting them (like a police officer) but instead by helping, teaching, counseling or training them. The test stated that her Social skill set includes, but not limited to, being comfortable around all kinds of people including strangers, feels comfortable engaging people, and is a good listener. Rachel concurred that she is confident in these areas.

Her second highest type was Artistic, which indicates that she values originality, imagination, independence, and beauty. She enjoys a variety of ways for self-expression (multiple tattoos adorn her body). Rachel again agreed with the test results stating that she is creative, prefers being around people who are non-conformists, and that she enjoys many types of music and writing.

Now her third personality type was a big surprise for the both of us - Enterprising. Enterprising people are usually the sellers, marketers, managers, the slick business wheelers and dealers, or politicians; all of which Rachel is not. Enterprising folks enjoy networking, taking risks, competition, and status. Again, these aren't traits I would have connected with this funky 26 year old. But Enterprising people are also the entrepreneurs. The ones who want to create something for themselves and have a myriad of ideas of how to do it. When talking this over with her, she revealed how owning her own business is an exciting prospect. Her mindset shifted after discussing the pros and cons of going into business for herself. Rachel's entrepreneurial spirit was realized, awakened, and verbalized.

Top Ten Occupations for Rachel M.

1. Special Education Teacher

2. Elementary School Teacher

3. Florist

4. Speech Pathologist

5. Retail Sales Representative

6. Cosmetologist

7. Foreign Language Teacher/ESL

8. Advertising Account Manager

9. Occupational Therapist

Now let's go over this list and the conversation I had with her about each of them.

Rachel at one time, majored in Art Education. She was planning on teaching elementary art classes and had a couple temporary jobs doing it. The children with whom she worked adored her energy and instruction but Rachel concluded that even though she was good at this occupation, she did not want to make it her career. Therefore #1 and #2 aligned with her values and interest but it wasn't her soul's calling.

She has no interest in flowers. So #3 florist isn't a career to consider.

#4, #9, #10 are all careers she thinks are honorable but nothing she wants to do. She doesn't have any interest at this time to work in a non-profit or community setting.

#5 and #8 are positions that do not interest her because she foresees being her own boss and not working for someone else. As she explained, "I don't want to work so hard so someone else gets the profit and the glory."

#7 In 2007 Rachel enjoyed working as an ESL (English as a second language) instructor in China. Traveling and learning about other cultures is a hobby of hers. However, these days she's more interested in planting roots than working/living abroad again. She informed me that she doesn't have any interest in teaching ESL classes in the United States.

Now #6 Cosmetologist was her Aha! moment. Rachel shared that she has always enjoyed makeup, beauty products, health and wellness. She once considered becoming a licensed esthetician or a massage therapist. However, the idea of providing the same service every day bored her.

END RESULT

What will this social, artistic young lady, who has the entrepreneur spirit, do with her life? How will she incorporate her passion for health and beauty?

Her plan is to open a funky but approachable salon in an up and coming Chicago neighborhood that will offer mostly organic products and services.

Where does the SAE come in?

Social = In the salon environment Rachel will work with people consistently, helping them look and feel their best, while advising them on products and other services. She looks forward to working with women's groups and other community groups by offering special salon days or offering services for fundraisers. She feels her salon will be an integral business in her immediate community.

Artistic = She's already envisioning the interior design to include pieces from her travels and artwork from friends and connections from art school. Also by hiring creative hair stylists and employees, she'll be surrounded by artistic energy. She will also exercise her creativity in creating the advertisement and marketing materials.

Enterprising = Rachel is giddy about becoming her own boss and all the duties it includes. She is even excited about her filing system and other office management systems. She is busy collecting resources for marketing her business and is gathering ideas for a logo, brand, and website. Two items I advised her to put on her long to-do list is to visit the SBA, Small Business Administration for general information and also to meet with SCORE (Service Corp of Retired Executives) to obtain a free business consultant.

Rachel M. is finally feeling confident with herself and her post graduation plans. She exclaimed, "I cannot thank you enough for validating all my concerns and hunches and helping me clarify exactly what I want to do with my life! You may have just saved me from years of unhappiness!"

This week I am honored to have my first international guest - Virginia Lowe of Australia. She has built a career around what she loves...books, particularly children's books. Inspirational story, indeed! (Isn't that a great and telling photo?)

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)

I am the proprietor of Create a Kids’ Book, a manuscript assessment (critique) service, which works specifically with children’s books. I started it thirteen years ago, and there still does not seem to be an agency anywhere in the English speaking world, that is only for children’s books. As well as advice on style- and copy-editing on manuscripts (written for toddlers up to young adult), we hold e-courses on creating both picture books (text with or without illustrations) and junior and young adult novels. The tutor gives feedback on each of the exercises – effectively mentoring the author through the process. There are also monthly workshops and a free e-bulletin. There is an American branch as well.

I am fortunate because both my business and my book feed into each other. Although they are not exactly on the same topic, both are relevant. Details of both book and business can be found on www.createakidsbook.com.au.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

I was a children’s librarian at first then lectured on children’s literature and English at university. I did not begin university until after this (I was 38), and went on from a BA (Hons) to an MA, and a little later a PhD. During the library course (before university) I had met and been enchanted by Books Before Five by Dorothy Neil White – a librarian who had made notes on her daughter’s book contacts. I decided I would keep a similar record when I had children, and I did, for both my son and daughter. I kept the record regularly for about thirteen years, over 6000 handwritten pages. I used this for my PhD thesis, and later again as the basis of my book Stories, Pictures and Reality: Two children tell (Routledge 2007). The book covers the years from birth to eight.

Later I was judge for the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s annual Book of the Year Award, and convenor of the Crichton Award for first time illustrators, and it was on the strength of this, as well as the thesis, that I went on to found the business.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honouring by following this path?

The business helps others to write for children, which is not only increasing the quality of manuscripts presented to the publishers and ultimately available to children, but is also good for the authors as they learn to write to their full potential in their specific genre.

With the book, I hope to convince people not to underestimate infants and young children, to expose them to many books starting in infancy, and to actually read the words (rather than just talking about the pictures). It has useful examples that professionals (librarians, kindergarten teachers ... ) can use when convincing others of the value of books with the very young.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

I guess my current challenge is finding enough time for everything. Of course working from home, and on something you enjoy doing, means that you don’t take much time off. Fortunately dear John (retired) looks after the house, cooking, washing etc. We garden together, and walk, but not as often as we should. I tend to get up, sit down at the computer, and leave it at about 12 at night.

Finding time to write the academic papers that I want to write (partly as publicity for my book) and also to get back to my novel, are challenges too).

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

Well, I have a unique set of life-experiences which enables me to successfully run the business (many children’s books that have come through us have gone on to be published commercially).

I couldn’t advise anyone to take up my specific career path, but just bear in mind that all your experiences may well be leading you somewhere that you cannot predict, and if you are a flexible thinker, and make use of all your skills and life-experience, you can’t be sure what exactly-right job will come your way (or else you will see your way through to create).

If you are interested in keeping a similar parent-observer diary of your children, just persist at it, and eventually it may, like mine, turn into a valuable study for other people to use (as mine has). Someone recently referred to my two as ‘everychild’ because they stand for all those children whose mothers started a complete developmental record, but didn’t keep it up for very long! Anyone interested in how a love of books begins, and the cognitive development of young children, will enjoy my book.

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)

I am a licensed acupuncturist and nationally certified Chinese herbologist. I help facilitate people’s wellness. My husband Ric and I own balance acupuncture and wellness center in East Rochester, NY. Its a beautiful space- stop in to say hello!

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

I have a master degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine, ( MTOM). After graduating from William Smith College in Geneva NY with a bachelor of arts degree, I attended Pacific College of Oriental Medicine for a four year master level degree. In between my degrees, I worked on Wall Street for 5 years.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?

Authenticity. There is not a moment in my day that entails me to do something that is against my values. My work reflects the way I live, my belief system and the way I parent.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

Having enough time in the day to pursue my interests and teach people about Chinese Medicine.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

Go for it! Being an acupuncturist is not a traditional job in the U.S. but it provides a lot of flexibility in lifestyle. Ric and I work it out that we split up our time between our work and our kids in a balanced way. It allows us to share our lifestyle with others since it mirrors our belief in natural and holistic living. It is humbling practicing this medicine with such an incredibly rich history.

Essentially I talk about how I rarely paint in the day time due to parenting, seeing clients, running my business as The Expressive Arts Coach, etc. So I mostly paint from 9pm-2am - not every day and never for 5 hours straight. It's usually 2 hours about 3 times a week.

This late night creating may seem like I'm spreading myself thin but it is the opposite. Letting go in the flow reinvigorates me and feeds my soul.

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)
I am a glass artist and make work by fusing glass in a kiln. I make both one of a kind work for galleries and production pieces that I sell at various art and craft fairs.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?
When I got divorced I started taking continuing ed classes at the local university. I had previously ridden horses and taught riding lessons for a living. But when I had some extra time on my hands and a need for distraction, I signed up for lots of different classes to keep myself occupied. I worked with clay, casting silver jewelry, painting and stained glass. For some reason the glass just clicked with me. It just felt like a natural fit for some reason. So I worked with stained glass for 4 or so years before taking a class in fusing. Then I was really hooked. I have since taken many workshops all over the country, read many books, and try to always keep experimenting. It has been 8 years since that first fusing class and I am still going strong.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?
I don't know about values I am honoring, but I sure have a list of things I am learning. Patience is a big one. Kilns are not quick. So every step in my process requires relaxing and waiting. Also, learning to see things with different eyes, so that when things don't turn out as you planned (which is often!), you can look past what you expected to see and take in what is there. And it may be even better than what you had planned! Another big thing I have learned is just to approach every situation with curiosity and a sense of fun. I think we sometimes make things too serious and there is no quicker way to kill creativity, at least for me.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?
Challenges are varied. My raw materials as well as all of the equipment required are pretty expensive, so sometimes that can feel like an obstacle. Also those times of feeling creatively blocked are tough. But I think the biggest challenge stems from not having any formal training other than the workshops I have attended. That seems to always bring up the questions of "what am I doing?", "who do I think I am", etc. But I read a wonderful quote in The Artist's Way that helps me when I get down on myself. She says, and I am paraphrasing here, that we are all creative, that creativity is god's gift to us and our use of it is our gift back. I love that. And it really helps get me back on track when I get in a funk.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?
My advice would be to try anything that sounds like fun! You just never know what will speak to you or open something up in you that you might have never known you had. Also, make work for you, not to please others. Your creative voice is unique and listening too much to others can drown it right out of you. Plus I think the work that people are most drawn to is the work that really sings the song of its creator. Many times I think the criticisms that others throw around is just a symptom of their own stymied creativity and has very little to do with the work they are criticizing. So make work YOU love, and the rest will take care of itself.

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)

i am a filmmaker (www.TheMuslimsIKnow.com), an artist, a blogger (www.maraahmed.com), and an activist.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

i have an MBA and a master's degree in economics. i worked in finance for many years, designing mathematical models for business analysis. i switched careers in 2004 and took some art classes at nazareth college. i went into filmmaking about a year later. took classes at the visual studies workshop in rochester and at RIT.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?

in today's world i think that we cannot help but be involved in politics one way or the other. for me that participation is motivated by my interest in human rights. living in this incredibly interconnected world, to me art, truth and politics are all intricately linked. joseph nechvatal said it best: “my deep feeling is that today art must indict, or at the very least, play the role of the jester who unmasks the unspeakable lies of the powerful. americans have been deceived and victimized by our government’s propaganda, and if art cannot rebuff and contest this grave situation by fueling the political will and imagination of resistance, I wonder why we need it at all.”

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

my only challenge is that there are simply too many stories, too many ideas, too many media i am interested in exploring all at once. so i have a tremendous idea for an art exhibit related to the iraq war, but i also have an idea for writing a play about a pakistani woman who has been kept in indefinite detention without trial and whose three young children were "disappeared" along with her about 6 years ago. finally i am working on two documentaries - one about the situation in pakistan and another about the partition of india in 1947.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

my only advice is to follow your heart (as corny as it sounds). do what you love. believe in yourself. persevere. everything else will follow.

Sandtray Creations - The Tribal Figure

Sandtray Creations are a mixture of sculpture, movement, 3-dimensional collage, drama, mixed-media art, and intuitive presence all wrapped into one powerful process.

On the face of it, it’s simple — you choose little figurines and arrange them in a box that has sand in it. Then we talk about it. On the face of it, But it’s really much deeper than that.

I've witnessed both personally and through my clients everything from subtle transformations to profound catharsis from this unique art-making exercise.

I have about 500 objects and figurines in my collection for clients to use. This little guy, the Tribal figure, only stands about 2.5 inches tall but delivers a powerful message. He is often used to describe dreams, spirituality, ancient/past life experiences, or unknown future outcomes. Since he is made of brass (I think), he is heavy for his size, therefore, at times he represents the "heaviness" or seriousness of one's spiritual quest. I call it a "he" but he's also been used as a "she." Not often, but a couple times this figure has been used to represent one's spouse or mother.

My Mr.Tweet Analysis, Experience, Summary

I'm a little pug in the Twitter dog park. Therefore, I was intrigued when I heard about the Mr.Tweet application, which states "Helping you find great people and followers relevant to your interests."

Through Mr. Tweet I found folks who are in my fields of work and interests: creative folks, artists, painters, writers, Rochester, NY folks, art therapists, expressive arts peeps, musicians, poets, workshop/retreat mavens, gallery owners, and some other Tweeps too.

On May 29, I began to follow @Mr.Tweet, which is the way to sign up for the free service. In about 3.5 hours I received a DM (direct message) with a list of 200 people he recommends I check out to follow due to my current followers, friends, and Tweets.

Of the 200, I chose to follow 37.
Most of the 200 were social media pofessionals, not my bag.

Over the following weeks, I unfollowed 6 of the 37. Mainly due to posts that weren't of real interest to me.

Of the 31 remaining follows, I was re-followed by 21.

On May 29, I had 71 friends and 90 followers.
Today (22 days later), I have 111 friends and 197 followers. Not all from Mr.Tweet connections but most.

These numbers may seem small to some but, to me, they are just right. Slow and steady. S-l-o-w and steady.

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share) I am a writer who loves exploration and discovery. (My new project is a series of books for spiritual seekers.) I also coach and teach writers artists and solopreneurs through my business, The Inspired Writer. I love to be an inspiration catalyst and seed-sharer for others to bloom bigger in their life. (Can you guess that I love flowers and flower metaphors?) I'm also a blogger, a paper artist, budding photographer, work-at-home mom, wife and much more, so I'm often flowing among my myriad passions and roles.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?) The three things that helped me the most were: writing regularly, reading regularly and sharing what I've learned. Some training came from my education (college and various writing workshops), but most came from hands-on experience. I've been fortunate to have a career that spans newspapers, radio, magazines, corporate communications, marketing and books. In recent years, I've added leadership, personal and spiritual development courses, too. And I'm always reading, usually 4-5 books at a time. (My favorite books to recommend to writers: The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron, Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott and Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg.)

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path? The necessity of self-expression, self-love, curiosity and service. The power of possibilities. And the belief that we are all here to offer something that only we can give.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any? I notice that I can sometimes be fearful (both about success and failure) and will sabotage myself by doing other busy work to procrastinate working on my writing or business projects. I'm learning, though, how to shift out of these behaviors. I also sometimes find it a challenge to find a flow that feels good among my many roles. So I'm always playing with the flow and checking to be sure all the flowers in my life's garden get tended!

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do? Write. Read. Believe in your dreams. Go for it. Be patient. Be persistent. Be kind to yourself. Give back what you learn. Bloom big — the world needs the beautiful flower you are.

Arts Education Report Card Shows 'Mediocre' Achievement

Today, for the first time in 11 years, the federal government released a national report card on achievement in the arts among 8th graders. This long-awaited report finds that since 1997, our nation's students have not made significant progress in developing their skills and knowledge in the arts. The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) in the Arts report is the only continuing, national measure of academic achievement in America's schools.

A nationally representative sample of over 7,900 eighth grade students from public and private schools participated in the NAEP Arts Assessment in 2008. Students were measured on their ability to create and respond to the visual arts; whereas, the study scaled back on music questions and only measured a student's ability to respond and identify music. Unfortunately, theatre and dance skills were not assessed at all due to budgetary and data collection constraints, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.

As reported today in the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, and USAToday, the findings are "mediocre," "lackluster," and "may make America's arts instructors kind of blue." Not a great report card. However, new U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan gave a strong reaction in support of arts education, "This Arts Report Card should challenge all of us to make K-12 arts programs more available to America's children ...We can and should do better for America's students."

As you may know, Americans for the Arts has been leading a national effort to increase federal funding and to strengthen the role of the arts in the classroom through legislative efforts in Congress. We have published a set of legislative recommendations that calls for changes to the problematic No Child Left Behind Act. Our schools need greater support for arts education - take two minutes to send a message to your Congressional delegation, please visit our E-Advocacy Center.

To raise awareness of the importance of arts education, we have also been leading, along with The Ad Council, the NAMM Foundation and hundreds of local, state, and national campaign partners, a public service awareness campaign titled, "The Arts. Ask For More." currently airing on radio and television and appearing in print media. In the television and radio ads, the arts are equated with a healthy diet; just like kids need healthy foods on a daily basis, kids need their daily serving of the arts. Included in the campaign is a list of "10 Simple Ways," detailing how parents can get involved in their child's arts education.

Please take action on this important education effort by sending a message to your member of Congress let your voice be heard.

I was lucky enough to go to an "arts" high school, so I was started on my creative path ev en before college. I went on to receive a B.A. in Visual Arts from SUNY New Paltz, and then a M.A. in Com pu ter Graphics Design from Rochester Institute of Technology.

you honoring by following this path?
I'd like to think I am honoring the value of "being crazy"--'cause sometimes it is good for the
soul just to be ridiculous for awhile. It's the old idea that being a
little loony keeps you sane in the long run.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?
I have to work to keep myself busy. I need to have a couple jobs/pr ojects/ideas going on
at once to keep my brain from rusting.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?
My best advice would be just to keep doing what you're doing. If you love it, it is worth
your time and effort. The more you do, the better you get,

and the more things will happen.

This week I am honored to have Jenna Park, a creative gal who wears a few different hats. The hat that I am familiar with is the one as co-owner of Whimsy and Spice, an incredible, dare I say...decadent, confectioner in Brooklyn. My personal fave is the cardamom marshmallows. 1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share) I’m a freelance graphic designer and art director and together with my pastry chef husband, own and operate an online confectionary, Whimsy & Spice, which just celebrated its 1 year anniversary.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?) I’ve always studied art since I was young and eventually went to art school for college. I started off as a fine art major, but also studied music composition for 3 years, so I didn’t think I would end up as a designer, but this is what I’ve been doing for the last 13 years. Mark has been cooking since he was left to prepare his own meals at age 12 when his mother couldn’t accommodate his picky food preferences anymore. So she told him that he could cook his meals from now on...and he did! His career started off a bit unconventionally since he didn’t go to culinary school (he also was a music major). He held restaurant jobs since his first year in college and then trained with other pastry chefs in NYC restaurants before becoming a chef himself. He’s been in the industry for over 13 years and that experience has definitely prepared him for owning his own business.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path? We took a a big risk in starting this business last year (we live in expensive NYC and have 2 young kids to support), but we decided to take that leap so we can be foster a more flexible schedule so that we can spend more time with our 2 girls. Our life and business is definitely family-oriented and we feel fortunate to be able to have careers and businesses that allow for an independent lifestyle not dependent on 9-5 jobs.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any? Well, along with the many advantages of a flexible, self employed lifestyle, we also deal with the downsides – an unstable income and funding our own health insurance, which in NYC is shockingly expensive. Owning your own business also can mean working long hours without rare days off which make the work/family balance often difficult, but we manage and do the best we can. Despite this, we wouldn’t trade it in for day jobs – I think we’ve come to value the flexibility and independence too much.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do? Going out on your own can be quite intimidating, but it’s important to stay focused, not underestimate yourself, and not get discouraged at the first sign of failure. Don’t be afraid to falter and take risks... and reach out to people! Working independently can often be lonely, so if not for advice or to bounce ideas with, then at least for comraderie and and good conversation - it’s so important not to be isolated.

This week I am honored to have Michelle Newkirk who helps people make educated decisions about their physical and emotional health through the use of natural products. She is a wealth of information and incredibly nice!

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)

I am a Natural Health Educator specializing in the areas of Nutrition and Digestion, Plant Based Enzymes, Bach Flower Therapy, and Reiki Tummo. (Th eRadiantLotus.com) I work one-on-one with clients from my office on East Ave (www.HealingHavenMassage.com) in Rochester, as well as teach classes and workshops. I will also be releasing an educational CD called "The Essentials of Bach Flowers for Kids", due out next month. I continue to work as a Skilled Nurse, mostly for pediatric clients, in the home care setting.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

Being a caregiver and healer came to me matrilineally. I'm proud to be a third generation Nurse and second generation Nutritionist. There has always been a curiosity in me that strives to understand what makes us work, and how all of the parts of us work together. A traditional nurse facilitates an environment that promotes healing. I carry this philosophy with me in my work today by helping clients to become educated and aware of how their internal and external environments affect their overall health and well-being. My formal training has come from Isabella Graham Hart School of Nursing, The Loomis Institute of Digestive Health, Certified Natural Health Professionals, and The Bach Foundation.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?

I am honoring my Heart. That Divine spark within me glows every time I am able to change an old, stale perspective, or renew lost hope, or empower someone to become more responsible for their health. I am so grateful to be doing what I do!

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

One of my greatest frustrations is having clients wait to come to me as a last resort, after trying everything else. I'm happy to help anyone who walks through my door, but there's much less pain and intervention involved in working preventatively and stepping in to balance out weaknesses before major symptoms arise. I'd like to help people realize that it's easier to pull the weeds from the garden when they're still seedlings.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

Bach Flower Therapy is a great place to start. It is a simple system designed for the layperson. The flowers are all-natural and safe for anyone to use. You can't do harm with them, so get a copy of The Essential Writings of Edward Bach and get started balancing out emotional issues and eliminating stress right away!

This week I am honored to have Thomas Cleary of Retied Rope Rugs where retired rock climbing ropes are recycled into rugs, dog leashes, and key chains. Truly unique items! Great gifts for the outdoorsy type:)

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)

In addition to being head weaver and webmaster for Retied Rope Rugs, www.roperugs.com, my primary job is science and outdoor education teacher at a small public charter school in south central Colorado. I also help my wife with her web-based info-business, www.whole-body-detox-diet.com.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

I started using my old rock climbing ropes to make doormats over 12 years ago. It took many attempts to find a workable rug pattern, and then I had to find a source of retired ropes. Over the years I have added other rug patterns, dog leashes and horse leads, dog and cat toys and even Christmas wreaths, all made from recycled rope. Many of the rug patterns come from the mariner’s tradition and can be found in collections such as Ashley’s Book of Knots.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?

I love the creative process and am always looking for new ideas. My biggest failure was a hammock that ended up weighing 25 pounds and was so lumpy that lying on it was worse than a bed of nails! This past-time of working with ropes has helped me with practicing patience and humility, the website design reminds me that I am not in charge or in control! Working with others ropes to create a functional keepsake reminds me of impermanence. These are indispensable values in my role as a teacher!

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

Many of the rugs I make are from ropes that people send to me for weaving. In this economy climbers are retiring fewer ropes and are less willing to send them to me to immortalize their climbing memories into a rug. 5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

I encourage recycling based art and reused products. In this economic and environmental climate finding ways to turn ‘waste’ into something beautiful and useful is of paramount importance. I challenge others to create something new from something old, it is an inspiring process!

More than anything humor and trust define me. Keeping life real is also very important to living life to its fullest.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?
My challenges are balancing family life and my career. Being self employed is much more difficult than I ever dreamed.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?
Work hard and smart. Do what you love, and develop a niche that is unique to you.

This week I am honored to have Lynn Wigell a.k.a The Yarn Wench. With a name like that, you have to be creative! She produces the most gorgeous roving and yarn for knitting, crocheting, needlefelting, wet felting, etc. Visit her website, www.TheYarnWench.com and her flickr page to oh and ah over her goodies.

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)
I have a website called The Yarn Wench where I sell my hand-dyed, handspun art yarns and hand-dyed fiber for other spinners and fiber artists. I'm starting my 4th year in business.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)
I got my B.A. in Fine Arts from Indiana University. My area of concentration was Woven and Constructed Textile Design and I studied with acclaimed weaver Budd Stalnaker. For a number of years until I had my first child I was a full-time weaver and spinner in the San Francisco area. After my first baby came along I became a full-time mom and squeezed fiber art and my other artistic passions (complex cloth design, mixed media, collagraphy, jewelry making, quilting, paper making, to name a few) into my rare free moments. It wasn't until my husband was downsized from a job he'd held for 15 years that I suddenly found myself needing to make a living. I turned to the only thing I knew after 17 years as a stay-at-home mom - my art. The Yarn Wench was launched and I'm having the time of my life!

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path? I am able to live a simple life free from the stress and anxiety of the corporate world. I'm afraid I would wither away if I weren't able to express myself creatively. In my business I don't even have to leave home - the postman comes to me to pick up my outgoing orders and to bring me my supplies! A typical week involves several days manning the dye pots, some time at the spinning wheel, photographing and inventorying the items I have completed each week, launching an update, invoicing and shipping out my orders. I enjoy how this little business is a self-contained entity that I control - and it feeds my soul!

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any? At first, it was hard to realize and adjust to the number of hours of work it took to get established. I went from a full-time mom to a full-time mom and a full-time business woman practically overnight. Suddenly I was working 7 days a week as a Yarn Wench and that went on for two years until my husband found full-time employment again! I was the breadwinner for the first time in our marriage. It was a challenge but it also was the best thing to have happened to me personally as I really got back to my artistic roots and reunited with what I do best.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do? Make sure you're passionate about what you are doing! Starting a little business like mine is so much more work than you might imagine. With that said, it is also one of the most fulfilling things you'll ever undertake! Make a schedule and stick to it - it's too easy to find other things to distract you when you're working from home. Treat your business like a full-time job. And have fun!

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share) I am the center director for Canalside Music Together Inc. Music Together is a research based, music educational program for children (ages 0-5) and their parents. We teach families Basic Music Competence, which is the ability to sing in tune, to keep a beat and have a great time doing it. I've been teaching MT for seven years and have been a center director for six.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?) I've always felt that Music Together found me! I have a BFA in Musical Theatre from Syracuse University and my first love is professional theatre, which I did for about eleven years in NYC. I discovered Music Together as a mother with my then two year old daughter (now eight). I received my formal MT training in Princeton, NJ and have really enjoyed sharing this wonderful program with the Rochester community. I also take advantage of the many opportunities MT offers for continuing education about music and children.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path? I feel I'm honoring my goal of doing something I love and loving what I'm doing with my life. Teaching a program like MT has allowed me to have fun at work everyday singing with children and their parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles. It has also enabled me to keep my priorities straight and be home for my kids when they get off the bus after school. Life is all about balance. I feel it's extremely important for women to have something they can call their own, whatever that is. Having something that's just yours can help you be a complete human being. And a complete woman equals a happy mother, wife and friend.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any? For me, it goes back to balance. There are times when there just aren't enough hours in the day for everything I have to do as a wife, mother and business owner. When you have four kids someone always needs something!!! Obviously there are days when one job overshadows the others, but I strive to take everyday as it comes and to remember to breathe through it. My husband is also a source of constant support for me. He is most definitely a huge factor in this equation! Maintaing a steady workout regiem does wonders to clear my head when it's foggy and to get my creative juices flowing.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do? Find what makes you happy and then figure out a way to make money doing it. I truly feel it's that simple. I really enjoy my job, so it doesn't feel like "work" most days. The hard part is figuring out what truly makes you happy. If you can identify what that is, and it's really the right thing for you, opportunity will find you. It doesn't have to be a big thing. Look at Martha Stewart - like her or not, she's made a fourtune out of teaching everyone how to make the perfect pie crust! Now, if that's not incentive I don't know what is.

have been using them for a long time in their sessions.

They're also called creativity collages, treasure maps, or life collages, and can be created in workshops and individual sessions, either online or at the studio office.

Vision Boards are a simple but powerful tool for gaining clarity in your life and getting what you want. You wouldn't drive a long distance without a map, would you? A vision board is a visual map for your life's journey.

What happens during the workshop?
First, you get clear about all the things you want in life - career success, a house, a baby, romantic love, to lose weight, or whatever they may be.

Then the fun part - gathering images! You choose images that resonate with you and your desires. You won't believe how remarkably relaxing and enjoyable it is to rifle through boxes of pictures and to rip out pictures from magazines!

Next, you sort and adhere the images to a poster board and then add any embellishments you wish. But first you will glue a photo of yourself in the middle of the board. This is to make a statement to yourself that these are your wishes and desires - not your spouse's, kid's, parent's, or society's. These are the things you want to manifest.

Lastly, if time permits, you will reflect about the process and the items on your board by doing a writing exercise.

Once your Board is home with you, place it somewhere where you can refer to it occasionally or every day. Just like the map for your long distance trip, you wouldn't just look at it once and then put it in the trunk of your car.
You have to review it often to make sure you're on track and to get those images in your conscious and unconscious minds.

Will everything on your Vision Board come true?
It may. It may not. But at least you have established the intentions by visualizing your perfect life.

I have created several vision boards for my own life and found many of the items have come to fruition. The process of visually organizing your life like this is very satisfying. I’ve also enjoyed witnessing the "aha!" moments of others.

After taking this workshop, you may even be so inspired to create a joint one with your family or your partner!

My Creative Life Interview #2 with artist Mary Ann Wakeley

My Creative Life is a weekly interview with folks who are living authentically, creatively, and making a living out of their passions.
I'm honored to have Mary Ann Wakeley share some of her insights with you. Her work flows with grace and ease. Lovely and bold.

1. What do you do?

I am an abstract painter working with mixed media. Most of my work is on wood.

2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

My training as an artist has mostly come through experimenting on my own. I was never trained as a painter. I thought early on that I wanted to be an interior designer and took some art and design evening classes at the Philadelphia College of Textiles and Sciences. When I realized this was not the route I wanted to go, I took a drawing and sculpture class at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, dropping the sculpture class after two sessions.

From that point on, I discontinued formal training and spent a lot of time educating myself through books and other reading material, using what time I had outside of my full time working life as an administrative assistant by experimenting with painting and drawing. It wasn’t until several years later after I turned 40 that I decided to put all my energy into painting. I have been continuing on this path since that time.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring by following this path?

Mainly I honor the value of the spiritual self in myself and in others. I try to help others when it’s needed by offering my support in whatever way I can. Outside of that, I focus on what’s important for me to be a happy and caring individual so that the energy I send out into the world is positive. I believe our intention is the most important thing.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

I view life as an adventure. My nature is to have fun but get things done in the process so managing my time to keep everything in balance seems to be the main challenge. In addition, I have familial responsibilities and a house to run. I like finding new ways to deal with life’s challenges.

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

My favorite piece of advice is a quote, although I forget the source! It is “leap and the net will appear”.

Follow your heart’s desire for that is your personal guide leading you to what makes you happy. Do not be afraid because fear paralyses your creative urges. If you want to paint, you must paint—start by doing it. Educate yourself in whatever way feels right whether it’s through self-education or by going to school. Check out artists’ blogs. I personally enjoy offering my work on the internet versus galleries. I like to feel personally connected with the people who purchase my work, and this is not always possible when you sell through galleries. Selling online also gives me more time to spend painting as there isn’t any travel time outside of purchasing supplies. There are many websites for artists to offer their work. I like etsy.com—I paint, put it online, and ship directly from home. The only way to know if something will work is by doing it. I also connect with people through my art at flickr.com. In October 2008 I started a blog to document my life as an artist. These are things that I am enjoying and view as successful as I make my art right now.

My Creative Life Interview #1 with Jeni Swerdlow , Drum Facilitator

Today is the first post of "My Creative Life," which is a weekly interview with folks who are living authentically, creatively, and making a living out of their passions.

I'm honored to have Jeni Swerdlow be my first since she is the one who introduced me to the fields of art therapy, music as healing, and expressive arts therapy.

1. What do you do? (career wise - whatever you want to share)

I am the creator and lead facilitator for DRUMMM Rhythmic Events. We provide innovative, hands-on drumming experiences for corporate and community events to build stronger teams, promote wellness, celebrate milestones and have fun.
2. How did you prepare for this career? (formal and informal education, books, workshops?)

A BA in art and psychology and an MA in art therapy fostered the practice of self-expression as a tool for healing. Losing my home in a fire brought me to the drum. Once I found my rhythm, I began an in-depth inquiry into the teachings of the drum. I played a lot and I listened more. I studied drumming and dance in Senegal, drum facilitation with master teachers around the United States, and eventually began sharing my passion with world 10 years ago.

3. Besides living according to the values of creativity and independence, what other values are you honoring
by following this path?

DRUMMM fosters CONNECTION--to the mind-body, to each other, to the music and to the universe. It's about the joy and healing power of PLAY, through which we can experience freedom and spontaneity in the moment. It's about COLLABORATING with others to create something that is bigger than the sum of our parts.

4. What struggles or challenges do you face, if any?

It's interesting to do something that I love for a living. People don't always get that I work very, very hard--and bring a lot of experience to the table--to make sure that everyone is engaged and having a positive experience. Making something look fun and easy doesn't mean that it's not work, often it's quite the opposite. If people only knew how many hours of work goes into producing each and every DRUMMM event!

5. Can you give some advice to folks who would like to do what you do?

Do it! Get curious about drumming--take as many classes and attend as many workshops as possible. Seek support-- find a teacher you like, join internet groups, even videos can help develop facilitation skills. Experience is the best teacher--get some drums and percussion instruments, start a community drum circle, spread the word and help it grow.

The Creative Act of Making a Website

2/23/09 When I began planning my business close to three years ago, one of the first things I did was research different website options. And boy did I research. I signed up and did a free trial run with many and also contacted several web designers for quotes. A couple sites I test drove were: artspan.com, foliolink.com, foliosnap.com, wordpress.com, and TypePad.com. Each had their merits and deficiencies. Not entirely happy with any of those options, I was about to pay someone to create a site for me when the perfect (ok, close to perfect) site option came to me through an ad next to my hotmail account. (example of effortless manifesting:) )
